ReplyDelete1a. Why do you run?
Helps keep me in shape.
1b. Who encouraged you to start?
I did. Nothing like having to go buy new pants because the old ones are too small.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
Pikes Peak Marathon: 26.2 miles (w/ 8000ft of elevation gain)
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
30+. I've lost track.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
Nope
5. Any advice about running?
Learn to go fast before you go long.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
Shoes: NewBalance 905's
Nutrition: A small sip of gatorade before the run, then more during the run if it is over an hour, nothing if it is under 60 minutes. For really long races (3+ hours) a gu packet every hour.
Sponsors: I wish :-)

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run because I love the way it makes me feel - strong and healthy. I don't think anyone ever really encouraged me to run - I've just always loved to do it.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
Many years ago I ran 25 miles, but I got bad blisters and it hurt. Haven't tried that since.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
Probably over 100. I've been running for a long time.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
No.
5. Any advice about running?
Enjoy it. Have fun with it. Train hard and race hard, but keep everything in perspective.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
Shoes: Brooks Adrenaline
Nutrition: A sports bar before I run, then very weak Gatorade while I run. Make sure to drink a lot of water.
Sponsors: Brooks Inspire Daily

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run to stay / get in shape so I can stay fit and strong for decades to come. Started out 7 years ago after the birth of my first son when I had a bigger stomach then my wife's!
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
2009 Chicago Marathon (26.2 miles)
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
Probably 50+ of various distances from 5k's up to the marathon
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
None. But sounds brilliant.
5. Any advice about running?
Make every workout fun. Running is a great opportunity to relieve stress, think about things in your life, and come up with brilliant ideas. It doesn't matter how fast you are, most workouts should be run relatively slow and easy. Save the fast stuff for speed work and races.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
Brooks Adrenaline 11's. Just drink water in most runs up to 15 miles. Over that I go to Gatorade. Sponsored by Brooks Inspire Daily.
Roy Naim, Brooklyn, NY 27
ReplyDeleteI run to express my ability to do things differently. I run to express myself. When I run, I inspire myself with ideas and many solutions to my day to day challenges (fun challenges). When I run, others are inspired because they see a person running they see a person who says I am NOT going with a big part of the world that decides to stay obese. When I run I show that anyone can do anything just as I lost 150lbs. I run as I said, to express my being.
It started with a challenge. I was 360lbs at the time and a mother of a child I work with (I volunteered for an organization that helps kids with illnesses) told me about the organization effort to raise money through money. Since I was heavily involved with the organization, it sorta made sense to run (and lose weight) for charity.
My Longest run has been 18 miles or so. Many of them in the middle of the night (when I used to have problems sleeping at night).
I haven't raced much in the 3 years I have been running. I would say about 10 different races from half marathons, to relay, to smaller races.
I do not have any connection at the moment with the Endurance Challenge but I will look more into it.
And my advice, have fun and don't become a technical runner. Sure, we want to grow and perhaps become faster and that's all good but please don't ever forget to have fun and express yourself freely through the run.
Right now I wear a Brooks Defyance 2 and I went through all different Brooks shoes.
I am a big water guy more than sport drinks but I mix it up if the run if longer than an hour or so. Once I had a banana on a really long run and I remember how weird it felt for me.
And I am a Brooks I.D. member so they are my partial sponsor.
Talmedge - Austin, TX
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run to keep myself sharp, to relieve stress and most of all, because I enjoy doing it! My dog got me back out on the trail. He needed excercise and so did I!
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
Austin Marathon, 26.2 miles!
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
As an adult, around 70. I was in track in Junior High School.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
No. But it sounds like a great program.
5. Any advice about running?
Always listen to your body. Let it go fast if it wants to go. If it truly hurts, stop. Hydrate, don't forget to breathe and have fun!
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? Brooks Launch for long distance. T6 Racers for short work. ASR7's for trail running and racing! Water, Clif Shot Bloks and Clif Bars for really long runs! (eating while running takes practice!) Sponsored by: you guessed it Brooks Team ID
Josh from Cape Girardeau, MO
ReplyDelete1. I run for many reasons. The main reason is for the competition. I also run exercise and to relieve my stress. No one really encouraged me to start running. I only started to run in order to make my high school soccer team.
2. The longest run I have ever done has been 18 miles. One day I decided just to run a new trail and just kept finding connecting trails to run. In the end, it equaled 18 miles. However, I have signed-up for a marathon and Ironman this year. Soon I can say I have ran 26.2mi.
3. I have raced at least 30 races. These range from 1 mile to 13.1 in distances. I also do triathlons with numerous half-Ironmans under my belt.
4. I have only read about Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge, but I have no connections.
5. This topic is too vague. So I will skip this one.
6. SHOES: I wear numerous types of shoes depending on the conditions. If it is cold outside I wear my heaviest pair of shoes with thick cloth instead of mesh to keep my feet warm. I have heard that this year Brooks will be creating some Gore technology shoes, which will replace my winter shoes. For training I wear a heavy pair of shoes to tire myself out quicker. For long races 13.1mi or over I wear a fairly light pair of shoes. Lastly, for short races and triathlons of any distance I wear my lightest pair, which allows me to quickly rotations of my legs.
NUTRITION: This is my specialty (current receiving my MS in Nutrition and Exercise). Pre-race and post-race nutrition is more important than nutrition during the run, but I don’t want to write a book so I will leave it at that. As for during the race nutrition, the most important nutrient is water. During any race lasting over 20 minutes a person should consume water. If a person practices proper nutrition, electrolytes do not need to be replenished unless a race lasts over one hour. Electrolytes can be in by liquid and solid forms. Electrolytes are found in drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade. They are also found in gel, gummies, and jelly beans.
SPONSORS: Besides being a member of Brooks ID, my local running store sponsors me in local events by giving me free entries into races, and discounting products.
1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteWhy not. Its the only sport where you can be out the door in less than a minute. No gear. Just shoes. No mechanical devices to fuss with. Just you and the earth. Kind of a Forrest Gump moment, I just started runnin'. Went around the block and was tired. Next day a bit further.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
100 miles in Leadville, Colorado, the highest city in the USA.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
38 in my 6 year career.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
Nope. But Jim is the man!
5. Any advice about running?
Its all about patience. You don't get instantly better. It takes a long time. Weeks on weeks of training, then you start seeing results. If you are young, its great because you can beat yourself up a bit more than the older crowd and keep on going.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I mostly wear Nikes and New Balance. Just because I like them. I eat mostly the usual gel products when running like GU, Shot Blocks, Chomps, etc.

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
Because it feels so good. Because running is like life. Because it is natural. Because I can. Me
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
26.2 miles x3 Upcoming: Boston -April and North Face 50K - May
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
100+
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I know Jim via Brooks ID, that is all. AWESOME!!! INSPIRING!!!
5. Any advice about running?
Never run hard on back to back days. The risk of injury is too high and your body is not being allowed to improve after the first hard workout.
Run because you love it. Because of how it makes you feel. Not times, medals, t-shirts ONLY. Running will bring you happiness in life only runners understand. When I see a runner and they see me, you give each other that look that says "good job"
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
Brooks shoes BUT everyone is different. My feet do not like Nike, fact. Does that make them a bad shoe? NO, they are just not for me. Gatorade and Honey Stinger gels -pre and during. Clif bar post (long runs say 12miles+)
Brooks sponsor since June 2010
Hi there everyone!! Chip LeDuff here from Nacogdoches, TX. I hope you're all doing well.
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run because it's my time for me that no one else can take away. As a nursing student, the vast majority of my time is dedicated to studying and patient care. Even if just for a few minutes for a quick mile, running is only for me, and I can be selfish with it in that respect. A coach from my middle school encouraged me to start. I started running cross-country when I was in 8th grade and made the junior varsity high school team during that time. I've been running ever since.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
The longest race I've run is the marathon...26.2 miles. I'm looking to do an ultra marathon in the future. Perhaps a 50K race.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
Since September 29th, 2007, I have run 42 races. High school was a while ago for me, so none of those races were high school races. I'm sure there are more. Those 42 are just the ones that I've logged into my running software. My next races are the Warrior Dash on March 19th and then the Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon on March 27th.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I don't have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge, but I thoroughly enjoy reading about it. My connection to Mr. Parry though is that we run on the same team. Although I've never net him personally, we share a team bond. I'm jealous of everyone who gets to participate in his challenge.
5. Any advice about running?
Start slow. A lot of people start running and go out too fast. They'll get frustrated by not reaching the goals they set out for themselves. People will always be faster than you, and people will always be slower than you. Enjoy the spot that run in.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I currently train in the Brooks Launch and the Brooks ST5 Racer. I race in the T6 Racer and the Green Silence. I'm a Streaker in the United States Running Streak Association, which means I run everyday. Today was my 741st consecutive day of running at least one mile each day. I eat a very well-balanced diet but don't think too much about calories because of all the miles everyday. I am sponsored by Brooks as a part of the Brooks Inspire Daily Program.
1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteI run for a lot of reasons, but mostly because I enjoy. Plain, simple - I enjoy it. It feels good to run.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
I ran across the Grand Canyon in a Rim to Rim to Rim effort ... I think that is 42 miles.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
I started racing in 1983 ... one year I raced over 40 times. I probably race at least 10 times a year now. So, if I had to guess, probably 250 ish.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I met Mr. Parry last year at the Pikes Peak Marathon. He seems to be enthusiastic, positive and maybe a little nuts about running and life.
5. Any advice about running?
You can do more than you think you can do. All things in moderation, even moderation. Little steps lead a long way to large goals.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
Fleet Feet Boulder is my primary sponsor, they are the best running shop in Boulder. Our principal shoe sponsor is Brooks. I also wear Zeal Optics Sunglasses (prescription).
You can catch up with me (GZ) at georgezack.blogspot.com and I hope our paths cross for some miles soon.
And Brandon, Alma is higher than Leadville.
Laura from Evanston, IL
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I started running as a way to stay in shape for ice hockey.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
26.2 miles
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
oh boy, this is a real guess - 70.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
No.
5. Any advice about running?
Start out easy and build up slowly to avoid injury. And, have fun.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors.
Sponsor: Brooks, wear Ravennas, ASRs, Launch, ST4. During long runs, I use Clif Bloks, PowerGel, SportBeans, PowerBars, etc.
Laura
1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteI ran a little bit in high school, but really started running after college. I lived in a very small community (much smaller that Stewie) and there was no access to a gym. This was one way to fit in exercise.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
I have completed one marathon (26.2 miles) and several half marathons....
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? I have done so many I can't even estimate this! I have also participated in duathlons and triathlons.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it? I like to read his blogs. I enjoy his enthusiasm and encouragement!
5. Any advice about running? Start slowly, but use it as a tool for your entire body. Running helps strengthen you physically, but it is also a time to be emotionally with yourself. I use this time to think about my goals, pray, and work through things that are bothering me!
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I will always buy the Asics. It is what works best on my feet and with the way that I run. I love shot blocks on a long run....
Jim from Ogden, Utah
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I love being in shape. I love the ability I have to run extreme distances and see things that 95% of the population will never see because they don't exercise. No one encouraged me to start. I wanted to get back into shape and running was a good way to do that.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done? I covered 167 miles in the 72 hour Across The Years race in 2009. Typically I do several 100 mile races a year and do many runs of 25-40 miles in training.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
Probably close to 100. 9 marathons, 11 100 milers (I think), numerous 50K, 50 mile races.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
Nope other than reading about it. I think it's a great idea if it encourages people, especially kids to get out and start running or doing some other kind of regular exercise.
5. Any advice about running?
Have fun. That's the main thing. If it's not fun, you won't do it. Also understand that to get good it takes perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to put in the time needed and to suffer.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
For road I wear some Mizuno's, on the trails I wear La Sportiva's. My nutrition during really long runs is usually liquid. Water, coke, 1st Endurance EFS Liquidshot gel. I am on the Wasatch Speedgoat Mountain Racing Team (www.wasatchspeedgoat.com). We do have a few sponsors.
Jim P. (www.anodynerunning.blogspot.com) from Evergreen, Colorado
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I got into running through playing Ultimate (frisbee). I started running to get in shape for tournaments. When I moved to Colorado, I heard about the Pikes Peak Ascent. One year I ran it, did reasonably well and I was hooked.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
Last year I ran two 50-mile races, the San Juan Solstice 50 and the Run Rabbit Run 50. This year, I will make my first attempt at the 100-mile distance at the Bear 100 in September in Utah.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
I don't race that frequently. I have done, maybe 15 races.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I first heard about Mr. Parry's Challenge via an Endurance Planet podcast. I actually was listening to it while running the San Juan Solstice 50. I am impressed with Mr. Parry's willingness to put his money where his mouth is. A lot of people talk about the need to get kids out and exercising. Mr. Parry is actually putting himself out there and showing kids they can do incredible things...all they have to do is practice, try and endure.
5. Any advice about running?
Sign up for a race several months in advance. Set a goal and ease into training for it. Listen to your body.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I run almost exclusively on trails, so I wear trail running shoes. Currently, I am running in La Sportiva Crosslites. For nutrition while on runs, I use PowerGels. Post-run, I like to have smoothies made with strawberries, blueberries, banana, orange juice, whey protein, kale and ground flaxseed.
I have no sponsors, but I did once find an unopened Gu gel on a trail.
1. Why do you run? What encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteI run because it makes me happy. It gives me time to think or listen to music or a book and explore my town and helps me maintain my weight. When I'm having a bad day, a run makes me feel better. When I run a long way, I go slowly and listen to a book or enjoy the scenery. When I run a short distance, I like to see how fast I can go.
I started running when I was in law school because I needed a way to work out my stress. I had two friends who ran every night at the track (at 11pm!) so I joined them a few times. I felt so proud of myself for being able to run a mile, that have I kept it up on my own (not so late at night) ever since.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
Twice, I have run 26.2 miles in a race - once in a marathon and once in an Ironman triathlon. Not in a race, I have run 22.8 miles around my town while training for the marathon. I would love to be able to run longer distances but it is taking me a long time to build up my endurance. My longer distances are still ahead of me.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
Including triathlons and swims (but not swim meets), I have probably done more than 50 races in my life, but I did no races and no running before I was 23.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I have no connection to the Challenge. I heard about Mr. Parry's Challenge on the Brooks ID forum and it was really inspiring to me so now I follow Mr. Parry's blog. When I was in school, I really admired the coaches who worked out with the sports teams, so it impressed me that Mr. Parry did that too. He is a great role model.
5. Any advice about running?
Go slower than you think is necessary at first until you build fitness. Running fitness takes a long time to build, but it is all about consistency. Run regularly and you are a runner - does not matter how fast. There is always time to speed up later!
Pay attention to the signs your body gives you that you might need a rest day (or two) If something aches after a run, that is a sign that something is off.
Everyone finds something that they like about running (racing, cute outfits, music, books, trails, seeing friends, visiting other schools or cities) so look for what makes you happiest in a run and concentrate on that. The rest is just details.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I run in Brooks Glycerin 8s right now for longer runs or Brooks Green Silence for short runs (they are so light and fast!). I have worn Brooks shoes for about 13 years and they work very well for my feet. Everyone's feet are different, though, so your local running store can let you try on a bunch of different shoes to see which ones are best for you. I use GU products for my nutrition. I like regular water or the new GU electrolyte tablets and GU Energy gels for runs and GU Electrolyte Brew, GU Energy gels, granola bars and water on the bike.
I am a GU Ambassador and on the Brooks ID P.A.C.E. team.

1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteI started running mostly as a result of team sports, especially soccer, and started running trails between soccer seasons in college in NH.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
100 miles.. but not many times.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? 200??
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? No connections but it sounds like a novel idea to get people out and exercising.
5. Any advice about running?
Find what makes it fun.. it can be hard to motivate, but once you get over that plateau, the pleasure is boundless.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? I wear Hoka One One running shoes, and eat Clif bars and Udos Oil,
Thank you!
1) I run plain and simple, because I LOVE IT! I originally started as a way to improve my lungs and help with my asthma
ReplyDelete2) My longest run to date is the Walt Disney World Marathon (26.2 miles) which I have done twice.
3)I would estimate that I have done 40 road races.
4) No connections except for being a fellow member of the most awesome group in the world! BROOKS ID!!
5) RUN HAPPY!
6) I currently run in the Brooks Adrenaline, but am going to be transitioning now into the Brooks Ravenna (also planning to pick up a pair of the Brooks ST5) I always run with Lemon-Lime Powerade(or water) and on long runs I use Vanilla Bean flavored Gu. I am super proud to be sponsored by Brooks Running as a member of the Brooks ID - P.A.C.E. group!

1.) Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I started running in high school to get in shape for Wrestling. Then started running Cross Country the next year. No one really encouraged me. I had an older brother who wrestled too but he didn't like to run. I found as I was running out the back roads of our farm that it was relaxing and I enjoyed it plus I knew I was getting in really good condition.
2.)What is the longest you have ever run?
22 marathons 26.2 miles
3.)How many races woiuld you estimate you have done?
Probably 200 from 1 mile distance to Marathon (26.2 miles)
4.)Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge?
Yup I ran with him the first year he did the 24 hour run and missed it last year. Then ran on the treadmill last year with him at the Rochester YMCA. I'm running the Fargo Marathon this spring and will be cheering him on at the Med-City Marathon when he finihshes the Challenge this year.
5.)Any advice about running?
Make it fun, everyone who starts to run or jog will have difficulty at first. Running is a discipline and a great way to improve both physically and mentally. Make it fun, run with and encourage friends to join you.
6.) Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I have worn Asics for many years, currently the Nimbus and prior to that the Kayano. Nutrition during marathons I have used goo and shot blocks. I prefer Gatorade after the run and during the day. Water is good too. I have had some dehydration problems in a couple marathons so I drink alot now. I sponsor myself but my wife would say she sponsors me, too.
Tualatin, OR
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run because it helps to keep my body and mind strong. It is a true passion in my life.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
31.6 miles. But I'm planning on going further than that.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
About 40 so far.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it?
I have heard about it, and I think it is fantastic that you have a teacher who is so dedicated to his students.
5. Any advice about running?
Take it slow and steady and run for the joy of it. If you happen to be fast, great, but even if you aren't, there is still so much to get from it. How well you do in races is not what it is about.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors?
I wear Brooks Launches on the roads and Cascadias on the trails. I am a part of the Brooks Inspire Daily program, but I wore Brooks shoes long before that. My favorite food for ultras is a cold baked potato - yum!
Jared Las Vegas, NV
ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
My wife and I read a book written by our friend Dean Karnazes in which he told the story of how he started running ultra races. Within a week we were signed up for our first half marathon and 12 hour event. Until that time we have never ran more than we needed to for basic fitness. Now 6 years later, we are both still inspired by Dean and many more like him.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
50 miles
3. How many races would you estimate you have done?
I did 39 last year and that tripled the amount of races that I had completed in total. To date I have more than 60.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge?
I read the story on the Brooks ID site and found it inspiring enough to read the blog and make these comments. Great challenge, great effort, and great to be out inspiring others. Comments about it?
5. Any advice about running?
Love every step that you take! Also, an ultra running friend of mine told me that he runs because he could not understand why he would not stop himself from feeling as good as he does after he runs.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? I am sponsored by Brooks and Gu Energy. I wear the Brooks Adrenaline 11 and Ravenna 2. For race nutrition, I eat regular food on the longer runs and on the shorter runs from 26.2 miles or less I consume 1 Gu Chomp every 15 minutes. One other interesting point for me is that I am mostly a treadmill runner who only runs outside for races.
1. Who encouraged you to start? I run because it's what I've always done. No one particular encouraged me. When I was a dorky, unathletic kid in elementary school, I won my 3rd grade PE class' mile and it was the first time I was ever good at something physical. It was a great feeling. Nowadays I run for a lot of reasons. I run because it makes me feel free and I get to explore nature. I want to see how fast I can be. I love the competition of races. I love the camaraderie I feel when I'm with a group of runners. I like pushing myself to the point of exhaustion and asking a little bit more. I run because it's as ingrained a part of my life as eating and sleeping.
ReplyDelete2. Longest run was a 50k (31.1 miles) trail race
3. I've raced probably about 20-25 or so at this point, if I include stuff I did in high school track
4. No connection but I think it's incredible.
5. Advice - most people run too hard too often. Most runs should be feel really easy, it will help you stay healthier and be able to hammer during workouts and races (when it's actually important to run hard). And chocolate milk after a workout is amazing.
6. I wear a number of different shoes, all Brooks. I rotate between the Ghosts and Glycerins on easy days, the Launch is for quicker easy days and some tempo runs, the Green Silence and T6/7 racer is for going fast, and the Cascadia is for the trails
Nutrition - I like to keep it simple. Most runs I don't take anything. If it's hot out I'll drink water or really dilute Gatorade on runs closer to an hour. On long runs I sometimes go with just sports drink, sometimes it's water and GU. I also like Hammer gels. Occasionally on long LONG runs/hikes I'll also have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
I'm not sponsored in a pro sense but I'm part of the Brooks Inspire Daily program
1. I was a baseball player. After retiring, at around age 30, I realized I need to do something to curb my increasing waist line. I then signed up for and ran my first 10k.
ReplyDelete2. I have completed the Pikes Peak Marathon three times, including twice as a D-D-Doubler (half-marathon on Saturday, full marathon on Sunday).
3. I will be completing my fifth marathon on May 1. I would guess I have participated in 20 or so timed races - 5k, 10k, half-marathons, marathons.
4. Just from what I have learned via his posts on the PPM message board.
5. One step in front of the other. When you're tired, stop.
6. I am a fan of Nike and currently run in Vomero 5. I do not like having water on my waist or back, so use one handheld bottle for long races. I estimate that I have raised about $20,000 for various not-for-profit organizations through my running efforts ... no sponsors, just lots of good friends who are supportive!

ReplyDelete1. I ran around a lot as a kid. I just loved the feeling, but then I grew up. It wasn't until I was in my 40's and had quit smoking that I remembered how much I loved running and maybe that would help to stay off the cigarettes. That was 5 years ago and I haven't stopped running since.
2. My longest race to date is a 50k (30 miles). I race exclusively trails.
3. 20 or so races so far.
4. Nope.
5. You don't have to be a rocket. Run as you feel. The more you run, the faster you get. People always think they can't do it because they aren't fast, but let's face it, fast is relative. And keep it fun. You won't keep doing it if it isn't fun.
6. I like a very simple shoe--Nike 101s Saucony Kinvara. You will never know your own body as well as if you become a runner, or any kind of endurance athlete, actually. You start to really understand what fuel means and how the tiniest thing can affect your performance. Amazing, really, this simple thing of running.

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run for many reasons, health is the primary reason - both mental and physical. To state the obvious aerodic exercise is good for you physically. It is also proven to be good for your state of mind. It calms me after hard days work, it helps me get pleny to oxygen to my brain so I think more clearerly on days when I've had a run in the morning beofre work. There is a study from CA dept of education thta shows how much better you'll do in school if you have aerobic activity
2. What is the longest run you have ever done? 26.2Mile marathons
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? Probably about 50 or so
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? Comments about it? I have never heard of it, but it sounds like a great program and I may steal some ideas from it :-)
5. Any advice about running? Start easy, keep track of time/mileage and ENJOY yourself!!!
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? Yes I volunteer as a Track coach and Brooks sponsors me as an "influential runner" - so I wear Brooks. Nutrition is most important days before the run, but occassionally for long runs (greater than 12 miles) I will take Gu packets. Really for the most part good nutrition along the food pyramid should be part of the habit - low fat protiens, high fiber carbs, fruti and vegetables. Non-processed foods are the BEST - think about it who would make a more wholesome food than Mother Nature!!, certainly not Oscar Mayer or Oreo
Good luck and KEEP RUNNING!!

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Here are just a few: fun, it makes me feel alive, friendships developed, positive example for my kids, getting out in nature... Who encouraged you to start? When I was 25 I did my first marathon just because I wanted to do one before I was 30. The race director was in his mid 60's and had just got back from the Leadville 100. After talking with him my eyes were opened to a whole new world of running. He is now in his mid 70's and still running ultras.

3. How many races would you estimate you have done? 40+/- ultras
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? I am doing a similar challenge with the students at my school in Gardner, Kansas. They will have 48 days to complete 24 hours of exercise and then I get the fun job of running 24 hours.
5. Any advice about running? Make running fun by running with friends, get off the roads and run on trails, and set personal goals for yourself.
5. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? For shoes Brooks on the road and Vasque on the trail. For nutrition Hammer gel with some paydays, snickers, and anything that looks good after 60 miles. No sponsors.

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
I run bc, its fun, keeps me healthy and i use it as a tool for those less fortunate. This was implanted in my mind at an early age by my father who was and still is a gret runner. growing up he used to host a race to rause money for Muscular Dystrophy. and i guess that sort of stuck for me.
Except i now run to raise money for MS research. i had a good friend in college whos mom died of MS while we were in college and i told ihm my friend joe, that you know what i am gonna raie money for MS as i train for my next marathon.that was great but then 2yrsa go my wife was diagnosed with MS also, so it is now my personal life long mission to raise money for the reserach and i live by the MS society say8ng "just move it" bc even thouse some ms pt acn not move it i can inspire them to live the best life they can and to never give up and say they can not do something.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?
142 miles, it was me and some guys form the collegexc team and our girlfriends at the time. ti was a great experience and what sucked me into being chookied on ultra running.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? i started runing wheni was 9 with my dad and never have looked back but easliy 300 if not more.

ReplyDelete1. Why do you run?- I love the way I feel when I am done, the sense of accomplishment. Who encouraged you to start?- Friends
2. What is the longest run you have ever done?- 50 miles
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? 35
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? - Just what I know be cause we are both with Brooks ID Comments about it? I think its awesome. Anything anyone does to further our sport in a professional way like this is positive.
5. Any advice about running?- It's YOUR running experience. It doesnt matter how fast you are, or even how far you run, or if you run trails or road races. Find what fits YOU, and do it.
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? Brooks ASR Trail shoes, Adrenaline Road Shoes. I love to eat a sweet potato before long runs, and boiled potatoes during my long trail runs. During a road race I always chew gum, and eat energy gels.
1. Why do you run? Who encouraged you to start?
ReplyDeleteI run first for my health/weight (get to eat lots also!) My dad did. He's still running at age 71 and is an inspiration to so many.
2. What is the longest run you have ever done? 28.4 miles in the Quad Dipsea over Mt Tamalpais in CA. 1/4 of the run goes from approx 0' elevation to 800' to 0' to 1400' and back to 0--the Pacific Ocean. You do this 4 times in a row.
3. How many races would you estimate you have done? Tough question. Started marathoning 3 years ago to raise $$ for a charity and now have a 15 year goal to do one in every state (9 completed). Probably hit 3-4 marathons, 2-3 10Ks, 2-4 5Ks and maybe a half per year.
4. Do you have any connections with Mr. Parry's Endurance Challenge? No idea??? Comments about it? I'll need to look it over.
5. Any advice about running? 1) be realistic with your pace and distance. Listen to your body. Let the training determine the goal...not the other way around. 2) Accomplish the different types of runs to have a purpose--long for endurance; tempo for lactate threshold; interval for speed; slow recovery when needed, etc. 3) When increasing mileage and intensity, try to keep the increase to a max of 10-15% per week. This helps prevent injuries. 4) Work on form...good form prevents injury and makes you faster. 5) Above all, have fun!!!
6. Other - shoes you wear, nutrition during runs, any sponsors? No sponsors...fast but not in that class. Prefer ASICS speedstar...neutral and lighter. Hydration critical during running for safety and performance. I only sometimes use power bar gels during 14-20 milers. Use a salt tab in the middle of a marathon preventive. Other than that, only endurox R4 post 1.5 hr run.
You guys are awesome for working this survey!
